Some 400-Footers For A Change

Hey, remember when I used to post things to my blog?

My original plan this past weekend was to head north to the Whites, join the AMC for a car camping weekend, and hike at least the 2 Osceolas. My tummy was pretty rumbly and grumbly though, and not in a good "let's have a snack Pooh Bear" kind of way. So I stayed put at home, chilled out, and then took my new hiking boots for a trail walk at one of the nature preserves here in town on Sunday afternoon.

I may not have climbed any 4000 footers this weekend, but I did bag 2 - count 'em, TWO! - 400 footers!

It's been several years since I was last at this preserve - usually I trek around at the one closer to me behind the High School. But this one has a little more varied terrain, which I definitely wanted so I could check out how the boots did.

It was almost 5 before I got on the trails. It's pretty flat going in for the first half mile or so on an old logging road.

Lots of swampy/marshy areas. The water is still pretty low in this neck of the woods, so there was a lot of mud, but luckily no mosquitoes this time of year.

Overall, the main loop trail is 4.5 miles long, with a lot of side loops and spurs in various areas. The nature preserve is 500+ acres in an area that used to be farmland, but for the most part the only place that's still open is the power line.

About a mile and a half in, the loop trail met back up with the power line, and I decided to cut the loop short and take the summit trail to the first of the immense mountains I would climb. Sadly, much like Zealand and the Tripyramids, it is a completely treed summit with no views.

Not even a USGS benchmark disk! Lame. I had to make due with a rock and a best guess for the summit location so I could take my usual feet picture, as well as the obligatory summit selfie.
Headed back down to another old woods road turned trail. Some portions looked like they are still driveable, while other sections have had quite a bit of wash out over the years.

The conservation department in town has discontinued some of the original trails, rerouted others, and created new ones. The originals are still pretty obvious. If it hadn't been getting so late, I definitely would have explored offtrail a little more. Good reason to go back soon though.

Note: do not enter the ground at this location. It is a dead end. Not sure if that notice is for the hikers, the snowmobilers, or the local wildlife.
I had joined up with the loop trail again by this point and started heading back towards the parking lot. But first I made a run up the other peak in the park. This one was significantly higher than the first at ~430' vs ~390'. Supposedly this was all pasture back in the day, but there appear to be plenty of trees nowadays.
As before, it was a little hard to tell where the summit was located. The free trail map at the park entrance was a little confusing in this area. Was the summit this lump of earth at the intersection with the mountain biking paths on the back side of the hill?

Or was the summit this pile of rocks just off the trail after I turned the corner?

Ah-HA. Twenty feet further along, there was a side path to a clearing with a cairn (and campfire remains and an empty beer can. Sigh.) I was so excited to reach the actual summit that I forgot all about feet fotos and just took my selfie. Who knows if I will ever make arduous the trek back there again!
It is much too early for there to be fallen leaves on the ground and I would like to register a complaint. There are still 2 more days of Summer left.
Back down off the mountain and heading back out to the trailhead, but there were still a few more sights to check out. There's a pretty good sized beaver lodge and dam just off the loop trail. No beavers were spotted this time! Since the last time I hiked here, they've added a couple of benches in this area, and it's supposed to be a nesting site for blue herons. It was definitely getting dusky by this time.
Headed back out the first woods road. About halfway between the beaver pond and the road, there's an old well just off the trail.

According to the town website, there are 2 old wells on the preserve property, and one is still useable.

I am thinking this well is not the useable one!

Overall, I wandered for about an hour and a half and covered somewhere around 3.5 miles. I didn't even come close to seeing half the preserve - I skipped the "back half" of the loop trail which is closer to 2.5 miles, and I didn't check out any of the spurs other than those heading to the 2 summits. There are at least a couple of old foundations on the far side of the property from where I was, as well as an intact segment of the King's Highway from the colonial era - a route created so that King George's tax collectors could move through NH more easily.

I also seem to recall an old rusted out jalopy hidden in the woods from when Merrow and I hiked this several years ago, that I didn't run across this time. Planning to go back soon when I have more time, more daylight, and a fresh camera battery.

Acceptable Reasons For Getting Up At 0-Dark-30

Saturday night I went to bed sometime after midnight-30, after spending the entire day celebrating Merrow and C's wedding.

Sunday morning the alarm went off at 3:45, and I (mostly) willingly dragged my ass out of bed at 3:49 and got dressed. Those of you who have ever seen me upright before 10AM know that I am NOT a morning person. So what made me get out of a comfy bed at the ass-crack of dawn?

The opportunity to watch the sunrise under perfect conditions from the highest point in New England, Mount Washington. The Mt Washington Auto Road opens early 3 times a year. Serendipitously, the last one for 2013 was the day after the wedding. J told me about it several weeks ago. I blew it off as an insane idea at the time - 3 hours of sleep to wind up socked in a cloud with freezing temps? No thanks. As the weekend got closer though, the forecast kept getting better and better. By Saturday night, the sunrise forecast called for 100+ miles of visibility, temps in the mid-40s, and "light" winds of 15mph. That's about as good as Mt Washington gets - EVER. We couldn't pass it up.

So. Early morning alarm - check. Significant grumbling on Kate's part - check. Driving fast on dark twisty roads - check. Being on of the first 300 people to see the sunrise in the US - check and CHECK!

I waited over 6 months to post this....

CONGRATULATIONS! To Merrow and C, who got engaged in Switzerland when we were in Europe last fall.

When I met up with them in Annecy, she held up her left hand and blinded me with the rock, then said "You're not allowed to say anything yet."
The happy couple on our last night in Paris. Note that Merrow is totally hiding her left hand in this picture.
There is quite a story behind their engagement, but let's just say it involves: delayed and then cancelled flights, rebooking of both airline and train tickets, multiple international cell phone calls and texts, stress drinking by Merrow, C pulling out the "but I am going to propose, you HAVE to get me there" card, the Swiss Alps, and one "I just repacked my bag, no I do NOT have room to carry anything of yours" eyeroll.

They are getting married in August and I couldn't be happier for them!

(I'm trying to go back and add some more posts about my trip to France before I completely forget all the details.)

Monday Montage

Back in the middle of February, some of my Internet friends came to visit for a weekend. We ate and drank and went to the patisserie down the road and went to a winery and ate and drank some more.

Then on Sunday I went and bought bigger pants. True story!

Here are some pictures from the weekend wine tasting.

"These balls are on fire" - Quarkie, with one of the many inappropriate quotes uttered over the weekend.

Tasty wine! Shortie, me, Craftosaurus, KL4W, and Quarkie

Craftosaurus thinks she looks like Justin Beiber in this picture. The rest of us think the Beeb wishes he looks this awesome.

Welcome to Austerity April

In the first quarter of 2013, I spent over 7% of my take-home pay on dining out. This is not counting vacation eating, already-fixed meals that I picked up at the grocery store, or 20-ounce Cokes at $1.79 a pop from the convenience store. This is not conducive to take-another-trip-to-Paris and buy-a-house-get-out-of-the-condo savings plans. I need a vacation from spending and to get myself back on track.

So: I am declaring this a (Mostly) No-Spend Month. No-spend months have become pretty common around the blogosphere, no need for explanation. My "mostly" qualifier probably needs some clarification, so here it is.
1. I have Bruins and Sox tickets. I am allowed to buy reasonable amounts of food and drink at such, plus pay for parking and transportation and fun things like that.
2. I am not changing any of my autopay bills, gym membership, Netflix, etc for the month. I am going to try to actually make use of them though.
3. I am allowed to take Merrow out for her birthday, and have drinks and queso with Sprockets.
4. Wine Wednesday at Riddle's is ok as long as I use the gift card I have. Ditto coffee from Dunks.
5. Lunch out on Friday if I've behaved for the week.

Basically I'm just trying to rein myself in on eating out multiple times a week, impulse purchases from Target and Amazon, and buying any more clothes/shoes/house stuff right now.

I'm going to post spending estimates for the week and weekend on Mondays and Fridays, with updates on how I did.

Less spending, more cooking at home, maybe even working out a little. Here we go.

Holiday Tranquility

There is a lot going on in my life right now. Work is busy, social life is busy, I've over-extended myself on projects around the house, and it is the holiday season on top of that. I feel like the brain hamsters have been spinning their wheels especially fast lately.

Last night as I sat at Wine Night, I pulled some scrap paper (actually, a used envelope) out of my purse and started jotting down things I need to accomplish over the next few evenings, plus lists of things I need to tell certain people so I don't forget. Along with notes to finish paining my cabinets, mail some packages, and write my Christmas cards, I decided to put Meditate for 15 Minutes on the list each evening.

After I got home with my leftover wine, I buzzed around the house for about an hour and a half, straightening and painting and crossing things off the list. And then, just before heading upstairs to get ready for bed, I turned out all the lights except for the candles in the window and the Christmas trees. I sat on the floor, looking up at the lights and decorations of Sam the Balsam. I focused on some of the different ornaments, reflecting on where and when I acquired them. Boo came over for some lovings, rubbing his face on my hands and crawling into my lap for a few minutes. Finally, I sang a couple of very off-tune Christmas carols. It took 15 minutes before bed, and really did relax me.

There are 12 more days until Christmas. I think I will be adding this to my nightly schedule.
